Why Black Walnut Never Goes Out of Style

There are certain species of wood that never go out of style. Black Walnut is one of them. Rich in color, full of character, and unlike anything else in the hardwood world, it’s no surprise that it’s become one of our favorite woods to work with at Fresno Forest Creations.

The Unique Beauty of Oklahoma Black Walnut Grain

What makes Oklahoma Black Walnut so special isn’t just its beauty—it’s the grain patterns. No two slabs are ever alike. Some pieces showcase deep chocolate brown heartwood with dramatic cathedral grain flowing from end to end. Others reveal beautiful contrasts between the creamy sapwood and dark walnut tones, with hints of caramel, gold, and even subtle purples hidden throughout the grain.

It’s one of the reasons we never get tired of working with it.

Our Partnership with Urban Wood Company in Oklahoma City

At Fresno Forest Creations, we’re proud to partner with Urban Wood Company in Oklahoma City. Owner Ryan Moore and his team have built an incredible operation that’s dedicated to producing some of the finest Black Walnut slabs you’ll find anywhere. Their commitment to quality aligns perfectly with ours—doing things the right way, not the fast way.

When we purchase our Oklahoma Black Walnut from Urban Wood Company, the slabs are professionally processed in Oklahoma before they ever make their way to California.

Advanced Radio Frequency Kiln Drying Process

The process begins with Radio Frequency kiln drying. Unlike conventional kiln drying methods, Radio Frequency kilns use advanced technology to dry wood more evenly and efficiently from the inside out. This process helps minimize stress within the wood while producing beautiful, stable slabs. Our Oklahoma Black Walnut spends approximately two weeks in the Radio Frequency kiln before moving on to the next stage of production.

Precision Milling and Slab Flattening

Once the drying process is complete, Urban Wood Company uses their massive 24-inch jointer to flatten one face of the slab before running it through their planer to flatten the opposite side. The goal isn’t simply making the slab smooth—it’s making it perfectly flat while preserving as much of its natural beauty and character as possible.

The difference is immediately noticeable.

Revealing Hidden Grain and Natural Character

Every pass through the machinery reveals something new hidden beneath the surface. Sometimes it’s dramatic grain movement. Other times it’s incredible color variation that remained hidden for decades inside the tree itself. Watching a rough slab transform into a furniture-grade piece of Black Walnut is something we never get tired of seeing.

Mother Nature has spent decades creating these grain patterns. We’re simply helping uncover them.

Ideal Uses for Black Walnut Slabs

Whether you’re building a live edge dining table, conference table, floating shelves, fireplace mantel, coffee table, or custom furniture piece, Black Walnut offers timeless beauty that’s difficult to match.

Choosing the Perfect Walnut Slab for Your Project

One of the things we love most about Black Walnut is how it changes with every slab. Some customers are drawn to highly figured grain patterns full of movement and contrast. Others prefer darker, more uniform pieces with subtle elegance. There really isn’t a wrong choice—that’s the beauty of working with a natural product.

No two pieces are ever the same.

At Fresno Forest Creations, we’re committed to sourcing premium hardwoods that we would proudly put in our own homes. It’s a partnership built on craftsmanship, quality, and a shared appreciation for beautiful wood.
